What is Xeomin and Botox?
Both Botox and Xeomin are treatments that reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you want a smoother complexion and fewer wrinkles, this treatment will help. By injecting very tiny amounts of Botox or Xeomin into a facial muscle, the treated area can relax, limiting movement and minimizing the appearance of wrinkles. A Botox injection can significantly reduce wrinkles while preventing new fine lines from appearing.
The products are a botulinum toxin, a substance that blocks nerve signals from the brain to a specific muscle. The Skin Care Center of Southern Illinois carries two botulinum toxin options: Xeomin and Botox®. These products are nearly identical in that they have the same active neurotoxin ingredient, and both are injected in the same way. However, Xeomin does not contain the carrier proteins Botox does, meaning patients are less likely to experience allergic reactions or resistance to the neurotoxin. Visit one of our dermatologists to find out which will work best for you.
What Happens During the Treatment?
Treatment involves the injection of very small amounts of botulinum toxin into the underlying muscles. The treatment itself is not very painful, takes just a few minutes, and requires no “down time” or prolonged recovery period. It often takes several days to see the product’s effect, but maximum results will set in between 7 and 10 days after treatment. These results typically last between 3 and 4 months before gradually fading as muscle action returns.
The average patient will require reinjection at various intervals. With repeated treatments, atrophy (thinning) of the muscle may occur, which usually produces longer-lasting results. In simpler terms, the more treatments you receive, the longer the effects may last.
Botox is injected directly into the target muscle to treat the following zones:
- Vertical lines between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose
- Squint lines or crows feet at the corners of the eyes
- Horizontal lines on the forehead
What Happens after Botox or Xeomin Treatment?
Once the muscle is injected, it cannot contract. Fine lines and wrinkles will gradually smooth out from disuse, preventing new creases from forming. However, results for any neurotoxin vary from person to person, activity level, the amount of product injected, and the treatment area may affect the duration of results.
Are there Side Effects?
Side effects are minimal and typically tied to the injection site. Soreness and mild bruising are uncommon, but they may occur at or around the treatment area. Patients can wear makeup after the procedure, but they should avoid pressing or massaging the area for several hours. You may also experience temporary headaches after the injection, especially after the first treatment.
Treatment of Wrinkles and Frown Lines
Frown lines are the result of gathering or pulling the tissue between the eyebrows into a fold. These unattractive folds and furrows are caused by the repeated action of underlying muscles associated with facial expressions. Years of squinting and frowning tend to leave deep wrinkles in the skin between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose, across the forehead, and at the corners of the eyes. Depending on the location of your wrinkles and frown lines, Botox might be the right treatment, but only a dermatologist can make the determination.
