Telehealth for Medical Dermatology & Cosmetic Skincare Consults

If scheduling an in-office visit, please bring and wear your mask to your appointment.

We know how challenging it can be to schedule an unexpected doctor’s appointment. Time off work, coordinating childcare schedules or just the time it takes to drive to the clinic can cause people to delay a diagnosis. At Skin Care Center of Southern Illinois, we believe you deserve the best in care, and now, we’ve made it more accessible. With our telehealth visits, you’ll have quick connection to high-quality online skin care – with a dermatologist you trust, who is available when you need it most.

This “telehealth” is easy to use – at home, at work or on the go – and we can diagnose over 3,000 non-emergency, skin, hair and nail conditions. Plus, necessary prescriptions will be sent to your preferred pharmacy once a diagnosis is made.

Features of Our Telehealth Visits:

  • Dermatologic consults with one of our board-certified dermatologists online
  • Set-up a telehealth visit for yourself, your child, or another dependent

Frequently Asked Questions

When Should I See a Dermatologist?

There are still many reasons to schedule an appointment with us during the COVID-19 pandemic, and for this reason we’re remaining open on a limited basis. Some conditions will require an office visit while others can be handled via telehealth. Dermatology is a visual specialty that is perfect for a telemedicine consultation and dermatologists have been performing this type of care for decades. By scheduling a telehealth visit with us, we can help divert care away from overburdened urgent and emergency care facilities.

What Conditions Need Immediate Care? (Telehealth or In-Office)

First and foremost, if you have any questions or concerns, please call our office. As a general rule, if a lesion is growing rapidly (i.e., significant change over a 1-3 month period), bleeding spontaneously, or painful, it is worth further evaluation. During this time, we may advise a preliminary telehealth visit as an initial evaluation, and may either provide reassurance or recommend a clinic appointment for a possible biopsy.

Similarly, if you notice a mole that is changing in size, shape, color, or symptoms, or is showing features of the ABCDEs of melanoma, it should be evaluated by us, especially if you have a personal history or strong family history of melanoma. While many rashes can be managed very well via a telehealth visit, a rapidly expanding rash or a rash with other symptoms (such as fever or abdominal pain) will likely warrant an in-person visit. Additionally, any concern for an active infection that would require intervention – such as an infected cyst that needs drainage – may necessitate a clinic visit.

What Can Wait?

The American Academy of Dermatology has provided guidance on topics encountered by dermatologists. Among these guidelines is a recognition that each clinic will have to address their particular situation differently. However, certain restrictions are widely advised during the pandemic including elective procedures. Non-urgent medical conditions such as precancers (actinic keratoses), cysts, acne, rosacea, and hair loss are also being routinely deferred, as are chronic skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema.

Furthermore, in-person evaluation of limited rashes and stable skin lesions should be delayed. Regular skin checks for patients without a history of melanoma or aggressive skin cancers are also being pushed back by most practices.

Can Telehealth be used for Cosmetic Dermatology Consultations?
Yes, we’re currently offering cosmetic consults through this platform. If you’d like a cosmetic dermatology consultation, please call us at (618) 244-0031 to set up an appointment. They’re affordable at $50 out-of-pocket per visit. We will not bill your insurance for this type of appointment.

Is This Service Covered by Insurance?
Most visits are now covered by insurance, including Medicare. Call your insurance provider to see if it’s covered under your plan.

Whom Can I Schedule a Telehealth Appointment For?
You can schedule an online dermatology visit for yourself or a member of your family including children over age 8.  Children younger than 8 need to be seen by our dermatologists in one of our clinics.

What If I Need a Skin Biopsy or In-Office Procedure?
If your doctor determines that an in-office procedure is needed, they will discuss this with you during your online appointment. A team member will then call you to schedule an in-office visit as soon as possible. Additional visit costs or insurance claims will apply.

Are My Personal Health Information and Photos Kept Confidential?
Yes! Our online dermatology care platform is secure and HIPAA and HITECH compliant.
